Landlords
Landlords, whether they are the owner or a property manager, are responsible for utilities at each rental property. The landlord should have a utility account in their name for each rental unit within Waukee city limits. Completing the Landlord form will set up a billing account and service for water and/or garbage service for the designated unit. You may set up automatic payments through your chosen bank account. When you have a tenant, they must complete the Start Service form to transfer utilities and bills to their name.
Any time the City does not have an active renter account, the utility bill will be sent by email to the owner or property manager. The landlord is responsible for paying minimum fees and consumption charges for the rental unit or property. If a renter does not pay their utility bill, the landlord may be ultimately responsible for all or part of the bill as allowed by state law.
How to Set Up Utility Service
- If you are taking over or establishing a residential rental property or unit, fill out this form for each service address. If you are a commercial customer, please call the Utility Billing Department. After submitting this form, you will receive a confirmation email within two business days that includes your new utility account number, deposit information and trash day, if applicable.
- Include utility information in your rental agreement or information that directs tenants to complete the Residential Start Service form to transfer utilities and bills to their name. Until the City has an active account for a tenant, you will be billed for minimum fees and any utility usage at the rental property.
If you have any questions, call the Utility Billing Department at 515-978-5502, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
