Safety City

Safety City 2026

2026 Safety City dates are coming soon! Registration will be through Waukee.org/Registration alongside spring and summer programming from Waukee Parks and Recreation. Watch for their new program guide in mid-February. We will also open volunteer registration in March if you are interested in helping our campers learn safety skills this summer.

What is Safety City?

The Waukee Police Department hosts Safety City, a weeklong, half-day course for students entering kindergarten at the Waukee Community School District each summer. Students learn about safety from police officers and volunteer youth mentors. A miniature city is set up to teach students about street safety, seat belt safety, school bus rules, when to call 911, respect for authority, bullying and more.

Safety City incorporates classroom time, hands-on practice and a field trip to the Public Safety Building. Parents are invited to a short graduation ceremony at the end of the week. Each student attendee receives a bicycle helmet and a t-shirt.
